Whatever happens next Europe is in need of a positive narrative, a more inspired vision for the future.

Many Brits are not aware that every time they leave this island to enter continental Europe they are most likely entering 'Schengen' – an area of 26 European countries that has abolished border controls. The UK is not one of those 26 countries. Nevertheless some Brits have been overheard complaining about having to show their passports on entering - which is just one example revealing the confusion on all levels that has, sadly, been created by a lack of information and a persistent anti-EU narrative in the UK over many years.
Problems exit elsewhere, too, but only in the UK, so far, has this escalated into a vote to exit the EU. Brexit is personal and it already affects all aspects of our lives. Decisions were taken by many on an emotional level, often without being given or knowing facts.
Tonight, starting at exactly this level, we will focus on positive emotional arguments by telling each other personal stories, with the aim of creating a narrative of our own positive experiences with Europe, Schengen and the EU.

Susanne Palzer is a cross-disciplinary artist, performer and independent researcher who grew up in Germany, not far from Schengen, Luxembourg. She has a long-standing relationship with the UK since the age of 13 and has been based in Sheffield since 1999. Susanne Palzer's main practice investigates the intersection of digital and analogue forms, in particular the fusion of digital technology and physical performance. However, political circumstances impacting on the personal over the past two years have forced her into an ongoing existential dialogue with her art practice. In March 2018 she initiated Twelve Months Notice to negotiate the impossible situation she found herself in. Susanne Palzer is also the curator of OPENPLATFORM/RAP(s)-TwT., and a co-director at Access Space, Sheffield.
